Psshaw Service Announcement [Tuesday Jun.16.09 | 09:27 am]
Got back from a one-and-a-half-day orientation at CCAD yesterday, where four different people told me I REALLY needed a Facebook. Ssssoooo I got one.

I tend to shy away from social networking sites because they make me realize just how small and exclusive my circle of close friends is. And, if I understand how Facebook is supposed to work, I don't friend everyone I've ever shaken hands with.

But you guys!  I like you guys.  You guys are cool.  So if you have a Facebook and you've ever wanted to make me look cool, today's your day.  I respond to direct commands, I know to stay off the furniture, and I'm house-trained.  I won't clutter up your wall too much and I'll draw graffiti for anyone I recognize (probably).

So c'mooooonnn.  Be a paaaaaaal.

[LISTENING TO |THE SPECIALS - Stupid Marriage]

HOOOGH. So the other day I went to Short North in Columbus. It was amazing and I want to go back a hundred times oh god.

There were murals everywhere, and fancy restaurants and little galleries full of awesome art. Every gallery seemed to have it's own little style, but in an interesting way. And I picked up some names of interesting artists I'd never heard of before. It was just so great aaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaa

Keep in mind I was raised a suburbs girl, and a big trip for me is walking down to the gas station to buy Oreos. The idea of an art community (especially one a two-hour drive from my house) is positively enchanting.  I found myself examining every piece of art and trying to extract the techniques used to create it. To be exposed to so many different ideas in one day... It was like a real-time internet, haha.

If that's a happy marriage, I'd prefer to be unhappy )

too long;skimmed for zombie pictures: Yesterday was awesome.

Oh and while I'm here. I know I've proven time and time again to be a subpar painter, but I actually dreamt the other night that I wasn't total shit at it. Inspired, I pulled out my acrylics and some scrap paper and did up some practice stuff.

the worst art dump ever )

the bible is scary [Friday May.08.09 | 11:30 pm]
I think everyone's heard the story of Sodom, but still.

Despite the collar, Fletcher doesn't really make a habit of reading the Bible.  His morals are a bit on the earthlier side.
...Aaaand it doesn't look like he's feeling especially encouraged to delve any further.

Okay I am going to bed.

[LISTENING TO |RAMMSTEIN - Eifersucht]

Just got back from my AP English test.  I'd tell you more but I think that's all I'm cleared to say to anyone until I die--"I just got back from my AP English test".  I love when these nationalized tests make you promise a hundred times not to talk about the questions with anyone UNDER PENALTY OF DEATH your score being voided. Makes me feel like I'm part of some classic-literature based conspiracy.  Me and thousands of other people.

I've been doing this internship at my dad's work because it was mandatory in order to get out of school as soon as I did. Everyone who didn't has to stay 'till June, suckerrrrrsssss. Dad works for a company that designs and sells billboards, and since I'm going to school to learn how to whore out my art it seemed appropriate enough.

So far I have had to(what is it with me and lists lately?):

- burn CDs
- futz around in Photoshop
- file things
- wear khakis
- stuff envelopes

I'm not working for my dad because that would be dumb, but the building is small enough that he checks up on me every hour or so. And when I say "small", believe me I mean small. The headaches and sluggishness I at first mistook for the soul crushing necessary to acclimate to a corporate environment was just a tich of lethargy brought on by several hours spent a stuffy office with no windows. I miss fresh air and non-fluorescent light. I'm adjusting though.

...Aaaaw, I'm sorry for using my journal to talk about me. Here, have some sketchbook pages.

I can't put an annoying, alienating lyric here because I do not speak german )

ffft fttt long personal post ew [Thursday Apr.30.09 | 02:46 pm]
[LISTENING TO |DAIKAIJU - The Trouble With Those Mothra Girls]

Welllp. Today was my last day of high school. Barring the fact that I have to come back on the 7th to take my English AP test but what ev. I've sent my enrollment papers in to the Columbus College of Art and Design. Which was at first not really interesting, but I went to visit it and fell in love. Of all the places I've applied it's ultimately the most well-rounded in terms of environment, cost and curriculum. And it has a writing minorrr ooooo which I might try.

I can't wait for classes to start. I want to do all those figure studies and basic exercises and get feedback and critiques and do art projects into the wee hours of the morning and most of all just IMPROVE. And hopefully in college I'll meet someone with some similar interests so I can be less the silent observer I was in high school. Though quietly judging everyone around me based on their outward behavior may just be in my nature.
Things I am going to miss
(because great people talk about ideas, average people about things, and small people about other people, but somehow I defy these simplistic classifications and habitually talk about all three):

- My awesome art teachers
- Some great, engaging regular teachers
- All the artists who're still alive and trying, whose stuff I loved checking out
- "Duct Tape Kid", the guy who made outfits and accessories out of duct tape
- Some awesome, dedicated, intelligent people who will probably end up doing crazy amazing stuff and improved my confidence in the human species
- Having so much class time to draw in boring classes, which gave way to maybe 80% of my art output

this is a cut )

So how 'bout that Swine Flu, aye? NOBODY CARES

I fricking hate the annual diversity project [Friday Feb.27.09 | 03:22 pm]
[LISTENING TO |TALKING HEADS - Slippery People]

"The annual "Diversity Project" is a nice but ultimately useless sentiment in a society (and school) that is more-or-less accepting as it stands. The compulsory nature of the project has degenerated it into a dreaded and tedious assignment for art and English students--an uninspired orgy of meaningless patriotic symbols and, this year, mechanical repetition of Obamaisms. While we've yet to run out of things to paste up with the American flag, it's plain to see that Nordonia High School is creatively dead inside.

I'm on the last leg of the four-year runaround that was my high school career, and just once I'd like to draw something I'll actually like.  Also I already used my good idea in ceramics. I like monsters and hands, so here we go. 'America is an amalgam of several different people and qualities and influences.' How's that for a meaningful metaphor."

They are either going to totally ignore my "100 word minimum artist's statement" or get me in sooooo much trouble.

For lack of anything better to do/complain about. Also to bump Fat-furthazar down. Eeeugh.

I'm hilarious.

Also uh, I've filled out or partly-filled out three or four of these by now. It does say to repost this yourself, and I've never been one to disobey anonymous textual demands with no means of penalizing me for not complying.
And from what I've seen of posts like these, people like talking about themselves. Aaand I guess I'd like to get to know you guys a bit better.
So if you'd be so kind. )

[LISTENING TO |AWESOME SNAKES - You Don't Like Snakes, I Don't Like You]

things the internet says are wrong with me )

Ughhhgnnnhhh. I haven't been feeling very creative lately, and of course my drawing suffers as a result. I'm aching so badly to do an art dump with art I don't have. My writing's suffering, too; usually I take great, undeserved pride in what I write, re-reading and proofreading an entry or post two or three times just for the sheer love of the artform that is the English language.  But.. Shut up God I just feel like making a journal right now I don't care if it's even vaguely interesting.

So. Instead of an art dump I'm making a cell phone camera dump.

"f++k off you piece of lowly self-righteous +ss. you don't deserve to have free internet tv" [Tuesday Nov.25.08 | 10:43 pm]
[LISTENING TO |IAN DURY & THE BLOCKHEADS - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick | Powered by Last.fm]

Tagged to do that "seven things about yourself" deal... A while ago, actually. By [info]flashikins, that sneaky minx.

1. I do not appreciate the idea of having my chest area referred to as "the girls", 'the twins", "the ladies", "Thelma and Louise", or any of the terms Steve Perry uses in "Flovilla Thatch vs. the Virile Garbageman".  But then, who does?

No, seriously.  Who is the woman perpetuating this horrible practice.  I know you and your desperately-low self-esteem are out there.
You know what? Now that I think about it I think I hate sexual euphemisms in general.

2. Sometimes when I get emails or comment notifications I mutter "awwwwww yeah, that's what mommy likes" under my breath. I KNOW, RIGHT.

3. I've been told my whole life that I'm "shockingly honest" and "blunt", and it never fails to surprise me. I really don't see why other people don't just say what's on their minds more.

4. My sewing machine has a face.

5. I have trouble enjoying bands with female vocalists for some reason. I also typically can't stand male vocalists with girly voices, though, so.

6. I have this recurring dream where I'm in a comic book store but I can't find any good comics. I've had it maybe seven times by now, and it's always in a different store. All these stores seem to carry are manga books and issues of Hellboy in spanish.

7. I went to a Catholic school, and I'd always hear things the other kids heard from their terrible parents about how Harry Potter was evil and that yoga opened your mind to Satan. To this day I cannot bring myself to flip anyone off because someone told me in the 4th grade that it means you hate God.

[LISTENING TO |ELECTRIC SIX - We Were Witchy Witchy White Women]

I've added Twitter to the growing list of useless services I'm signed up for. I'm not sure exactly why you would care where Joe Vague-Acquaintance is stopping for lunch, but I'm willing to try and find out! Actually, I guess I'm kind of looking forward to the challenge of spicing up the endless string of banalities that is my life.
Does anyone on my list even have one of these?

twitter.com/Psshaw

Twitter's double-edged sword is its character limit, which allows/resigns users to ambiguity when posting. So I'll.. Probably end up having to explain a lot of these later on. For instance:

Na na na na na. Marissa explains it all. )
